30 Displaced After Fire Sparks At East County Apartment Building
The American Red Cross was offering housing assistance.
LA MESA, CA — About 30 people were displaced after a fire sparked at an apartment building in eastern San Diego County, authorities said.
Crews from Heartland Fire & Rescue, San Diego Fire Department and San Miguel Fire & Rescue responded to the blaze at 7:38 p.m. Monday in an apartment unit at Spring Hill Apartments at 4341 Spring St. in La Mesa.
"The sprinkler system inside the apartment building did activate, helping to keep the fire in check," Heartland Fire & Rescue spokesperson Andy McKellar said. "Only one unit was directly affected by the fire, but water from the sprinkler system affected an additional 15 units."

Crews knocked the fire down by 8:05 p.m., McKellar said. There were no injuries, but about 30 residents were displaced. The American Red Cross was offering housing assistance.
The cause of the fire was under investigation.
