Dozens of Dogs Rescued from Filthy East County Home

El Cajon police notified the San Diego Humane Society about the plight of dozens of terrier- and Chihuahua-mix canines.

EAST SAN DIEGO COUNTY -- San Diego Humane Society personnel on Dec. 1 rescued almost 70 dogs being kept in cramped and unclean conditions at a small El Cajon home.

El Cajon police notified the animal-welfare agency this morning about the plight of the dozens of terrier- and Chihuahua-mix canines, Humane Society spokeswoman Elizabeth Pecsi said.

The dogs were evaluated at the scene before being taken to the humane society's San Diego campus, where veterinarians and veterinary technicians were further examining them for medical problems that can befall animals living in unsanitary surroundings.

``Our primary concern is to determine and address what their medical and rehabilitation needs will be (and to) make them as comfortable as possible as they settle into our care,'' said Jennifer Brehler, chief operations officer for the agency.

The owner of the dogs, whose name was not disclosed, is cooperating with authorities, Pecsi said.
