Horses Seized from Boulevard Property; Out-Of-State Owner Investigated for Neglect

BREAKING: The horses' caretaker is also being investigated, according to authorities with County of San Diego Animal Services.

BOULEVARD, CA — Four horses have been seized by San Diego County animal services officers from a property in the East County community of Boulevard following an investigation in reports of neglect, county officials said Friday.

"The owner lives in Minnesota and had left a caretaker in charge of the horses," said County Animal Services Director Dawn Danielson. "The case is now under investigation but we may pursue charges against the caretaker, the owner or both."

Officers removed one severely malnourished horse Thursday night in an effort to save its life. Three other horses reportedly being kept in unsanitary conditions were rescued Friday afternoon by officers.

A veterinarian is examining the remaining three horses for medical issues, but all three were observed to have hoof problems and may be pregnant.

County officials said the owner has 14 days to reclaim his horses if he shows he can provide the necessary care and if he can pay the cost of their impoundment, housing and medical care.

If the owner does not try to reclaim the horses, or cannot show he can provide the necessary care, officials said the animals will remain at the Animal Services care facility in Bonita until they are healthy enough to be adopted.
