Make Every Mile of the El Cajon St. Patrick's Day Half Marathon Green

RunEC Foundation and Waste Management of San Diego are teaming up to ensure runners and fans keep this year's festivities eco-friendly

As runners train daily for the St. Patrick’s Day Half Marathon and 5k in El Cajon scheduled for March 15, RunEC Foundation and Waste Management of San Diego are encouraging runners and their cheerleaders to be environmentally friendly during the event.

This year’s St. Patrick’s Day Half Marathon - 5k will kick off with the half marathon at 7:30 a.m. on March 15 in downtown El Cajon. The 5k will begin shortly afterwards at 7:40 a.m. and the Green Mile at 7:45 a.m. After the race, attendees will enjoy live music, entertainment and fun for kids and supporters.

“Wearing green while you cheer on runners is not the only way attendees can show their support,” said Michael Stowers, chairman of RunEC Foundation. “This year, we are teaming up with the local Waste Management team to encourage participants to show how eco-friendly they can be by recycling and throwing away their trash at this year’s event.”

Waste Management is committed to encouraging recycling and making it easy and convenient for all spectators and runners to recycle and will be providing in-kind recycling and trash services including clearly marked trash and recycling boxes for attendees to properly dispose of waste.

“As part of the fabric of the East County community, we are thrilled to be supporting this year’s event,” shared Elmer Heap, municipal relations manager for Waste Management of San Diego. “We invite all attendees to help us keep this event green by keeping trash off streets, and recycling the appropriate items.”
