Man Tasered After Allegedly Threatening Lakeside Deputies With Cinder Block

A sheriff's sergeant explained the events that allegedly led to the incident Tuesday outside a Jack in the Box restaurant.

LAKESIDE, CA: Deputies Tasered and then arrested a man who allegedly threatened them with a cinder block early Tuesday outside a Lakeside fast-food restaurant, according to a sergeant with the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.

Deputies had been called to Jack In the Box, 12155 Woodside Ave. about 6:45 a.m. to deal with a female customer described as "uncooperative," Sgt. Cliff Rinder said.

"Once the customer was escorted out of the building, she walked into the middle of the street," Rinder said. "The deputy escorted the female from the middle of the street, to his patrol vehicle."

But as the deputy tried to put handcuffs on her, she resisted and a struggle ensued, according to the sergeant.

An off-duty deputy who was driving by stopped to provide assistance, Rinder said.

"While attempting to handcuff the female, a black male adult approached the deputies with a large cinder block in his hand, telling the deputies to let the female go," Rinder said. "The deputy drew his weapon and instructed the male to drop the block. After several seconds, the male dropped the block, but was still being aggressive. The deputy then drew his Taser. The male refused several commands to get on the ground and the deputy deployed his Taser."

Back-up deputies and detectives from the sheriff's Lakeside Substation responded to the scene to assist, and both the man and the woman — whose identities were not disclosed — were arrested without further incident, according to the sergeant.

The woman was taken to a hospital for a mental health evaluation, while the 38-year-old man was booked into jail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon.

Rinder said the deputies involved in the incident did not suffer any injuries.
