Man Walking on I-8 in El Cajon Struck, Killed by Car: CHP

BREAKING: The fatal East County collision remained under investigation Monday, according to the California Highway Patrol.

EL CAJON, CA β€” An investigation was under way Monday to determine the identity of a man who was struck and killed Sunday night while walking on Interstate 8 in East County, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The unidentified pedestrian was reportedly walking between the number one and two eastbound lanes of traffic near the Greenfield Drive offramp in El Cajon when he was struck at 11:50 p.m., according to CHP Officer Kevin Pearlstein.

A man driving on eastbound I-8 approaching the offramp was unable to avoid hitting the pedestrian, Pearlstein said.

Emergency personnel arrived on scene and transported the gravely injured pedestrian to Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego, where the man succumbed to his injuries.

"The collision is under investigation to determine the identity and alcohol or drug use of the subject," Pearlstein said. "The driver was not arrested or cited and alcohol and or drugs were not a factor for him."

According to the CHP, no other vehicles were involved in the fatal collision.
