Santee Ranks 47th on List of Best Calif. Cities to Raise a Family

Only one San Diego County city made WalletHub's top 20.

SANTEE, CA β€” Among 240 cities in California, Santee came in as the 47th best city in which to raise a family, as rated by WalletHub.com in a report released Tuesday.

WalletHub.com ranked the East County city 186th in the "Family Life and Fun" category, 13th for "Education, Health and Safety," 49th for "Affordability" and 96th for "Socioeconomic Environment."

Only one San Diego County city β€” Poway β€” made the list's top 20. Coming in 17th, the North County inland city ranked 11th in the state in the Education, Health and Safety category, but just 160th for Family Life and Fun, according to WalletHub.

Other area cities' rankings were: Encinitas, 23rd; Carlsbad, 45th; San Diego, 89th; Chula Vista, 94th; San Marcos, 111th; Oceanside, 143rd; La Mesa, 145th; Vista, 168th; Escondido, 172nd; El Cajon, 211th; and National City, 229th.

Among other things, Family Life and Fun included the number of attractions, in which San Diego tied for first, and the number of playgrounds per capita, in which Escondido had the fifth fewest.

Education, Health and Safety involved school quality, high school graduation rates, air quality and per-capita crime.

Affordability compared median family income to housing prices and cost-of-living.

Some of the socioeconomic Environment statistics were divorce rates, percentage of families living below the poverty line and the unemployment rate.
