Two Years Behind Bars For Man Who Took 'Hornblower' On Joy Ride

The 27-year-old stole the dinner cruise ship in January. Damage to the boat was estimated at $25,000.

SAN DIEGO, CA -- A man who stole the dinner cruise ship "Hornblower'' and took it for a spin around San Diego Bay before being arrested was sentenced today to two years in state prison.

Jorge Gaviria, 27, previously pleaded guilty to vehicle theft and setting a vessel adrift.

Authorities said Gaviria jumped a fence during the early morning of Jan. 2 and drove the Hornblower out into the bay. Employees noticed the ship adrift, and the defendant looking at them through binoculars.

Police said Gaviria jumped off the boat as officers approached and tried to swim away, but was arrested a short time later.
Judge Michael Groch scheduled a hearing for April 27 to review restitution. At a previous hearing, prosecutors said around $25,000 damage was done to the boat.
