Sanghi was then trapped inside the vehicle and was pronounced dead after he was extricated, according to the CHP.

Campbell Union High School District officials today announced that grief counselors were being provided at Prospect High School.

"The district is prepared to do everything we can to support Niyal's family and (the school's) community through this period of grief," Tanya Krause, the district's interim superintendent, said in a statement.

Krause added, "This is an especially tragic turn of events because (Saturday) was also (Sanghi's) birthday."

The high school's principal, Joell Hanson, said in a statement that the teen "was a good student with a lot of friends."

The announcement said that Sanghi was wearing a seat belt when CHP officers arrived at the scene.

CHP officials have said that drugs and alcohol do not appear to have played a part in the boy's death.
