Bear Fire In Santa Cruz County: 60% Contained

The Boulder Creek blaze led to some locals evacuating their homes, but no mandatory evacuations were ordered.

SANTA CRUZ COUNTY, CA – The Bear Fire, a 10-acre blaze that broke out Friday around 12 p.m. near Boulder Creek in Santa Cruz County, was at 60 percent containment as of Saturday morning.

The agency called it "great progress," noting that both air resources and ground crews labored over recent hours. With slightly reduced smoke, firefighters were better able to estimate the scorched acreage as eight to 10 acres. Previous estimates were logged at 15 to 20 acres possibly affected.

Firefighters from the Boulder Creek Fire Department and Cal Fire, with air tankers and helicopters, are at the scene of a wildfire, dubbed the Bear Fire, this afternoon in the Boulder Creek area, according to authorities.

The blaze began near the 600 block of East Road and spread to nearby vegetation near Middleton Drive and Bear Creek and Mayfair roads, the Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office reported.

Some residents on Red Hawk Canyon Road self-evacuated, but there are no mandatory evacuations in place the agency said.

One structure where the fire originated was destroyed, but no other structures are currently in jeopardy, authorities said.

Officials said smoke will be visible in the area.
