Meet Carlos Lozano

Get to know your neighbors a little bit better.

Carlos Lozano is president of an engineering design company headquartered in Scotts Valley. In his spare time he enjoys singing in the San Agustin Catholic Church choir.

Scotts Valley Patch: What is your occupation?

Carlos Lozano: I am the president of ACEL DESIGN INC., an engineering design services company headquartered in Scotts Valley, and with a wholly owned subsidiary, ACEL DESIGN Pvt. Ltd in Chennai, India. Our design services include chip design, board design, mobile apps, software QA, supply chain management and project management.

Patch: Where were you born?

Lozano: I was born and raised in Los Angeles, Calif.

Patch: Where were you educated?

Lozano: I graduated from Loyola Marymount University with a BSEE. 

Patch: How long have you lived in Scotts Valley?

Lozano: My wife, Doreen, and I have lived in Scotts Valley for 21 years.

Patch: What brought you to the area?

Lozano: I came from Laguna Niguel, Calif. to start up a new development group for Hitachi Computer Products. I built a 50 person engineering team to develop an enterprise RAID storage system and led marketing, business planning and engineering development.

Patch: What is something you are known for?

Lozano: Having an optimistic outlook and using positive outlook to get the best out of engineering teams, and being an effective and successful program and project manager.

Patch: What is your latest project?

Lozano: My latest project is ACEL DESIGN’S Mobile Application Development design service offering. We have added a 30 person team with 12 years of mobile app development experience on all major PDAs and tablets.   

Patch: Books you last read?

Lozano: Outliers: The Story of Success by Malcolm Gladwell and The Girl Who Played with Fire by Steiger Larsson.

Patch: Newspaper or magazine you read regularly?

Lozano: Wall Street Journal, Newsweek, EE Times and IEEE Spectrum

Patch: Movie you could watch again and again?

Lozano: Matrix.

Patch: Favorite thing to do in your spare time?

Lozano: Two things I do in my spare time are singing in the San Agustin Church choir and playing the piano by ear.

Patch: What is one of your most gratifying accomplishments?

Lozano: While working for a start-up company called Xambala Inc., I successfully program-managed the partnership engagement with ETRADE—developed trading strategies and deployed trading appliances at Chicago Mercantile Exchange and NASDAQ.

Patch: What is your greatest indulgence?

Lozano: Attending the opera or ballet.

Patch: One of your most memorable vacations?

Lozano: I have had several memorable vacations. One was with my wife on the rugged west coast of England at Port Gaverne. Another special vacation was with my daughter to the beautiful city of Zamora, Michoacán Mexico, the birthplace of my father. He and his family left Mexico not long after the Mexican revolution.

Patch: What is a goal you are chasing after?

Lozano: Successfully growing ACEL DESIGN’S service sales in 2011 to $2 million.

Patch: What do you like most about life in Scotts Valley?

Lozano: I like that it is a community nestled in the Santa Cruz Mountains. It is refreshing to travel home via Hwy. 17 to our community. I like the fact that I can see deer and wild life walking through our property. I like the fact that we are just 7 minutes from the ocean and we live in clear air environment. Scotts Valley has a lot of great people all trying to make this a great community.
