Deconstruction / Reconstruction was selected as a theme for this exhibition as a way to mirror a world that is constantly, shifting and organically developing in form. That world imposes on the artist to create art that integrates fragments of the world around us by changing and converting the meaning of these fragments into new and meaningful, tangible forms that are relative to the current environment while employing the strategy of cultural recycling.
The artists in 5 In The Mix artists creatively speak not only singularly but also, in unison as a complete voice. The process of working and experimenting together as a group allows collaborative creativity and access to new sources of inspiration and support through an integrated approach of working
Each artist has their own interpretation and style of implementing mixed media. The work of Donna Geist Buch is innovative and cutting edge. She pioneers with various elements including multiple textures, found objects and frequently integrates unique structures and finishes into her works. Teri Dryden’s art is richly sophisticated and blends subtle, muted tones into her mixed media collage, where she encourages the use of recycled paper, often from antiquated books and bindings. Ben Goldman is a master of water media and fearlessly explores multiple techniques in his abstract work. Barbara E. Jones is a visionary intuitive artist and her works often reveal a slice of life story that include hidden treasures and often implement collage, embellishment and assemblage. Fritz Suter takes a lyrical, whimsical approach to his vibrantly colored paintings and ceramics; his art is prolific and stylistically diverse. Marilyn B. Jordan uses narrative themes and colors that evoke emotion, whether on canvas or in 3-D. Norton Wright looks to maximize spontaneity and structure in his paintings, and is inspired to paint in musical tones.
This experimental body of work intrigues the viewer, draws them in and challenges them to redefine their own perception of Deconstruction / Reconstruction.
