How Did The National Night Out In Van Nuys Go?

The Children’s Community School in Van Nuys hosted their National Night Out and offered the community a chance to socialize with cops from the LAPD and their cadets.

National Night Out was created in 1984 and is meant for communities all over the country to join together and socialize with law enforcements. The event is an opportunity for residents, especially children, to understand the importance of safety in their community.

Assistant director Heather McPherson said Children’s Community School is an independent school that has a partnership with the LAPD, which is why the school hosts the event every year.

“We are happy to do this and bring the neighborhood together,” said McPherson. “This is more of a casual chance for neighbors to meet each other and the police to meet the neighbors.”

Free hot dogs were offered to the neighborhood and police officers and cadets had a chance to socialize with the neighbors.

Carol Jackson brought her grandchildren so they can “be exposed to as much culture as possible.” Jackson said that her grandchildren are from Washington and came to California to vacation. They now attend the day care program in the Children's Community School and learned about National Night Out through the school.

Cadet Jesse Torres said that the officers bring cadets to help set the event and to meet the neighborhood.

“It helps the community a lot,” said Torres. “We have a lot of parents come out for this.”
