Valley Presbyterian Hospital Offers Free Health Workshops for the Sherman Oaks/Van Nuys Community in September

Valley Presbyterian Hospital is pleased to announce our VPH Cares Programs for September.

Valley Presbyterian Hospital is pleased to announce our VPH Cares Programs for September. We are excited to offer this community development program consisting of free public health education workshops.

The workshops are designed to educate community residents about health issues facing the San Fernando Valley region: diabetes, stroke, and women’s services. Participants will learn how to live healthy lifestyles, minimize chronic health conditions and improve overall health outcomes.

All programs will be held at the hospital in the Health Education Center located at 15107 Vanowen St. Van Nuys, California. Parking is located at our Noble parking structure, at the corner of Vanowen St. and Noble Ave., and our campus parking structure, on Vanowen St. past Sepulveda Blvd.

Saturdays September 6 and 13, 10am - 2pm or Mondays September 8, 15, 22, 29 - 7pm - 9:30pm

Childbirth Preparation Series Learn the latest in labor and delivery comfort measures and other important topics. This course is offered as either a four-class series (weeknights) or a two class series (weekends). Classes must be taken in sequence. Registration is required. This class is recommended before the seventh month of pregnancy.

Tuesday September 9, 4:30 - 6pm in Spanish, 6-7:30pm in English

Health and Flavor in the Latino Kitchen (Salud y Sabor en la Cocina Latina) - Join VPH for a FREE workshop on how to manage diabetes through nutrition. This informative and highly interactive session will inform participants about ways to prepare foods in a healthier way, to identify correct portion sizes for preparing healthy meals and to make healthier choices when eating outside the home. This workshop is presented in collaboration with American Diabetes Association.

Wednesday September 10, 6pm - 9pm

Heart Saver CPR A classroom, video-based, instructor-led course that teaches adult, child and infant CPR and AED use, as well as how to help a choking adult. Great for parents-to-be for learning how to care for their infant in an emergency. There is a $15 fee for materials.

Wednesday September 10, 7pm - 9pm

Prenatal - Get off to a good start by taking a prenatal class. In this 2 hour class you will learn about: the changes of pregnancy for you and baby, due dates, staying healthy and comfortable, warning signs, work decisions, relaxation and much more! Best if taken between 1st & 2nd trimester, your support person is encouraged to attend. Please wear comfortable clothing and bring two pillows.

Thursday September 11, 7pm - 9pm

Parents to Be Hospital Tour Learn about the before-birth programs and services that are available to you and visit the labor and delivery unit.

Friday September 12, 11am - 1pm

Baby Shower & Hospital Tour Meet the maternity staff, learn about hospital resources, and take a hospital tour during a fun, informational celebration. Baby Showers and Tours are conducted in English and Spanish.

Friday September 12, 1pm - 2pm

Breastfeeding Preparation Class (Spanish) Learn basic breastfeeding techniques and where to get help if needed.

Tuesday September 16, 10am - 11:30am

Stroke Facts and Fixes - Hear from a panel of physicians and health care experts on how to prevent a stroke. Topics will include: what is a stroke, symptoms of a stroke, risk factors associated with strokes and possible treatments available.

Wednesday September 17, 7pm - 9pm

Baby Beginnings Infant Care A “Parents-To-Be Survival Guide” to help you navigate your hospital experience as well as the first weeks at home with the new baby. You will learn what to expect for the baby initially in the hospital, newborn care, diapering, swaddling techniques, bathing tips, feeding options, infant safety, newborn sleeping patterns, soothing
techniques and more.

Monday September 29, 6pm - 9pm

Breastfeeding Preparation Class Learn basic breastfeeding techniques and where to get help if needed.
