News from the Sierra Madre Playhouse

News Flash! On February 2 @ 7:00pm The Idyllwild Jazz Ensemble joins us for their first concert.

AN IDEAL HUSBAND

The Sierra Madre Playhouse is currently presenting a six week run of the play,  An Ideal Husband, by Oscar Wilde.  This play was Wilde’ favorite next to the ever popular The Importance of Being Earnest displaying the author’s impeccable wit.

That wit made him enormously popular as a prominent social critic of the upper classes in late Victorian England. The adage that nothing is new under the sun may be proven by Wilde’s view of the power elite which he delivers with biting satire as much appreciated today as it was over a century ago. Talking about 1895 London, we see parallels with the political and sexual intrigues being played out today in our nation’s capitol.

An Ideal Husband, at the Sierra Madre Playhouse, 87 West Sierra Madre Blvd., Sierra Madre, plays Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 p.m. and Sundays at 2:30 p.m. through February 23. Reservations can be made online or by calling (626) 355-4318.

Los Angeles Area Critics Are Singing Our Praises

‘It’s always a pleasant surprise to discover a gem in a most unlikely setting, and that’s what I experienced last Saturday night when I attended a performance of Oscar Wilde’s comedy An Ideal Husband at the Sierra Madre Playhouse. It was my first time at the venue, and I was delighted to discover an Equity Waiver theater that was more than capable of giving the larger houses a run for their money.”

BC Blogcritics, Theatre Review (LA): ‘An Ideal Husband’ at the Sierra Madre Playhouse By Kurt Gardner    |   Thursday, January 23, 2014

“Gigi Bermingham’s direction is spot-on. Naila Alladin Sanders’ costumes look terrific, and Cesar Retana-Holguin’s attractive stage design is a good as one would expect to see in a larger house. I’m looking forward to seeing another production in this venue.”

 “The cast is first rate!”

“The play is full of trademark “Wilde-isms,” and I’m afraid that years of spoofing (including the classic Monty Python sketch) have rendered them rather groan-worthy. What keeps the piece relevant for contemporary audiences is its depiction of corruption and hypocrisy in high society.”

MUSIC AT THE PLAYHOUSE

Our new Sunday Music Series: Emerging Artists in Concerts at the Playhouse continues this month with our 3rd collaboration with the Colburn Conservatory of Music.  From the initial response, we realize that there is a real appreciation for excellent music in intimate surroundings and the acoustics in our theater have delighted the musicians and the audiences who have already made this a popular new series.  The caliber of music from these musicians is that of world-class venues such as Disney Concert Hall (as many of them are performing there as well); yet the price of admission is $20 and the commute is ideal!

On February 2 @ 7:00 pm the Idyllwild Jazz Ensemble joins us for their first concert.

The Idyllwild Arts Academy is the country’s premier and internationally-acclaimed residential arts high school. It’s diverse student body of gifted young artists hail from more than 25 countries. Come hear the amalgam of unique sounds before the group hits the road to the Berklee High School Jazz Festival in Boston.

IN THE PIPELINE

On March 7th, Battledrum opens.  This musical follows the frontline experience of three young drummer boys who become unlikely comrades as they find themselves part of our nation's most tragic conflict.
