Join the great men and women of the Sierra Madre Police Department as the front line contact for all people and phone calls coming into the station. Under direct supervision of a Police Sergeant or Watch Commander, a dispatcher receives and transmits routine and  emergency telephone and voice radio messages, dispatches equipment and personnel; receives and transmits teletypes for related computer systems. This position will work nights, weekends, and holidays depending on the assigned shift.
 
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The following duties are normal for this position.  These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive.  Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Communicates with police units in the field by radio; answers telephones on the Emergency 911 line; places service calls and dispatches police, medical, fire and search and rescue accordingly;
  • Maintains a daily log of police activity;
  • Completes and maintains a variety of police records;
  • Monitors radio and teletype system communications of local, state, and federal agencies;
  • Processes inquiries from officers in the field through the Justice Data Interface Controller (JDIC) computer;
  • Gives first aid in medical emergencies;
  • Inputs data into the computer about stolen or damaged property, stolen vehicles, and registered guns;
  • Assists public at the counter, giving and receiving information and directing to proper offices; makes copies of reports for citizens, insurance companies, attorneys, etc.; receives and processes overnight parking permits; types clearance letters for citizens;
  • Logs and serves subpoenas for in-house officers;
  • Assists the public at the reception desk;
  • Receives complaints and reports, and provides the public with information and directions;
  • May work nights, weekends, and holidays;
  • Performs other related duties as required.
 
Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent required; with the ability to type at least 45 words per minute (certificate must be provided prior to the Chief’s oral); or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities. Applicants must have completed the three week POST Dispatcher Course and provide proof of completion of the course (POST CERTIFICATE) prior to testing.
 
Salary and Benefits
  • Salary range:  $36,322 - $46,357 annually.  Salary will be negotiated based on qualifications.
  • Up to $650 per month for health, dental, and vision insurance for employee and family; plus 25% of the cost in excess of $650/month.
  • $25,000 A D & D and life insurance policies & PERS level II survivor benefit are provided.
  • PERS retirement – City participates in the CalPERS retirment system. Miscellaneous employees who were CalPERS members prior to January 1, 2013 are enrolled in the 25%@55 formula; City pays 5% of employee share and counts it toward final retirment compensation. Employees enrolled in CalPERS after January 1, 2013 will be enrolled in the 2%@62 formula; City will pay 50% of the "normal cost". No participation in social security.
  • Annual paid leave of 88 vacation hours (for first four years), 104 hours of holiday leave, and 96 hours of sick leave with a wellness bonus program.
  • Uniform allowance: $55 every 28 days
  • Flexible spending accounts for medical and child-care expenses.
