The Sierra Madre Woman's Club begins its 107th club year activities by enjoying the beautiful music of Alena Devaughn, violinist, at their Fall Membership Blue and Gold Tea, Wednesday, September 25 at 1 pm in their historic 1914 Essick House in Sierra Madre at 550 West Sierra Madre Blvd.
Alena, the daughter of Robert DeVaughn, opera singer and Pastor Connie Larson DeVaughn, minister at the Altadena Baptist Church, is also the niece of Alteouise DeVaughn, another noted opera singer.
Those interested in exploring what the Sierra Madre Woman's Club has to offer those (mostly women "of a certain age") with somewhat flexible daytime hours, are invited to reserve their space for this much anticipated program, followed by tea and social time, by calling 626-355-3928 by Monday, September 23.
The Sierra Madre Woman's Club is a member of the International General Federation of Women's Clubs (gfwc.org) headquartered in Washington, D.C. since 1890. Also a member of the California Federation of Women's Clubs (cfwc.org), Sierra Madre is the third largest of the 26 federated clubs in the CFWC San Gabriel Valley District #20 (gfwc-sgvd.org). Federated clubs offer social and volunteer fundraising activities to benefit their community, district, state and nation under the national motto "Unity in Diversity". In California, club members are "the Key" to community support and improvement, with activities involved with Arts and Culture, Conservation, Education, Health Home and Lifestyle, Public Affairs and international FOCI.
The Sierra Madre Woman's Club has, as its primary fundraiser, the Wistaria Thrift Shop open from September through May (626-755-9312); the Essick House is also available for rentals. For more information, messages may be left at 626-355-4379, www.facebook.com/SierraMadreWomansClub or www.smwc.info.
