VIDEO: Teachers and Parents Protest Cuts to Pasadena Unified School District Budget

More than 50 teachers, parents and district employees or officials showed up Tuesday morning in Pasadena to protest state cuts to education that will affect the .

The protest included residents of various areas included within the PUSD, which includes Sierra Madre, and was held at the corner of Lake Avenue and Del Mar Boulevard.

Some in attendance were parents of kids who came up through PUSD schools, such as Kathy Kabayashi, who told Patch in the attached video that her 26-year-old daughter attended , which is scheduled to next year.

The school district could see , and officials are hoping that the state will pass a budget that is as favorable as possible to education. If the full cuts could go through, dozens of district jobs could be at stake, and could be lost.

At the same time, officials know a tough budget is likely.

Ed Honowitz, a PUSD board member who attended the rally, said that if the state doesn't cut education, it will have to cut other vital services, such as low-income assistance and mental health programs.

"The alternative cuts are difficult to make," Honowitz said. "There just isn't enough revenue for the state to fund everything that is needed."

Tuesday's rally is part of a week of planned protests taking place throughout the state. A larger Southern California rally is planned for downtown Los Angeles on Friday.
