Building upon last week’s stellar salute to the sixties...Robby Robinson is firing up his virtual time machine, once again, and teleporting us all back to the greatest decade in music history...the 1960s!
This week, Rockin’ Robby has assembled an extraordinary panel of guest stars, including musical genius, Vinny Martell, of the legendary “Vanilla Fudge”, Joey Dee, the undisputed Godfather of the dance craze known as “The Twist”, and prolific singer/songwriter, Billy Vera, (yes, the same guy who recorded the iconic song “At This Moment” which was featured on the 1980s hit NBC-TV show, “Family Ties”, for the duration of a major storyline starring Michael J. Fox as Alex P. Keaton!)
“Last week's show was so much fun, and there was still so much left to talk about, so we're bringing the theme back for Part 2!”, said Robby Robinson. “This Monday, I've assembled an ALL-STAR PANEL of artists who didn't just witness the 60s...they helped create its soundtrack. We'll revisit the music, the memories, and the artists whose songs continue to touch our hearts more than sixty years later.”
𝐉𝐎𝐄𝐘 𝐃𝐄𝐄
"The Godfather of the Twist" and leader of Joey Dee & The Starliters, whose smash hit 𝙋𝒆𝙥𝒑𝙚𝒓𝙢𝒊𝙣𝒕𝑻𝙬𝒊𝙨𝒕 became one of the defining records of the era. His legendary band became a virtual "School of Rock," featuring future members of The Rascals, Charles Neville, Ronnie Spector, Joe Pesci, and even a young Jimi Hendrix. The Beatles once opened for Joey before conquering America themselves!
𝐁𝐈𝐋𝐋𝐘 𝐕𝐄𝐑𝐀
Singer, songwriter, musician, author, actor, and one of music's great historians. Billy was writing and recording hits in the 60s and 70s before scoring one of the biggest songs of the 80s with 𝑨𝙩 𝙏𝒉𝙞𝒔 𝑴𝙤𝒎𝙚𝒏𝙩, leading to nine appearances on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. Few people know popular music history better than Billy Vera.
𝐕𝐈𝐍𝐍𝐘 𝐌𝐀𝐑𝐓𝐄𝐋𝐋
Founding guitarist of Vanilla Fudge, the groundbreaking band whose epic version of 𝙔𝒐𝙪 𝙆𝒆𝙚𝒑 𝑴𝙚 𝙃𝒂𝙣𝒈𝙞𝒏' 𝙊𝒏 helped lay the foundation for hard rock and heavy metal. Vinny shared stages with Cream, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and Jefferson Airplane. In one of rock's great trivia questions, Led Zeppelin opened for Vanilla Fudge!
When it comes to genre-defying music...the 1960s had it all.
This music hasn’t aged a day...and never will. The music of the 1960s has transcended two millenniums, seven decades, time, space and multiple generations!
The door to the 1960s opened gently with 1950s-inspired holdover styles, such as rockabilly and doo-wop, evolved into Rock, Pop, Soul, Motown and R&B, morphed into British Invasion, East and West Coast sounds, Bubblegum Pop, Folk-Rock, Protest songs, Country-Pop, Jazz-Rock and Hard Rock, and blew the door wide open, delving into Psychedelic Rock, Progressive Rock, and fledgling Heavy Metal sounds, while introducing the singer/songwriter concept, setting the stage for the 1970s and beyond.
The neighborly atmosphere of the era, as well as variety programs such as “The Ed Sullivan Show”, graciously allowed “room” for every imaginable genre of music.
Multiple styles of music often topped the charts at the same time...making the 1960s one of the most volatile, spectacular, experimental and creative musical decades of all time.
The 1960s presented a rare era where a Classic Crooner, a Hard Rocker, a Country-Western star, an Opera diva, and a Jazz artist could all coexist in harmony side-by-side on the charts!
There was an unspoken respect and camaraderie between artists of differing style which needs to be re-ignited today!
The music of the 1960s remains the fabric of our lives till this day. Everywhere you go there is some relic of the 1960s still playing in the background.
Music of the 1960s was imaginative, explosive, creative and daring.
