program overview
Join
us for an exploration of the innovative possibilities within crochet!
This workshop invites you to delve into the sculptural aspects of the
craft by stitching directly onto natural objects and witnessing their
transformation. Drawing inspiration from a rich tradition, you will be
introduced to a variety of techniques that help conform to the natural
changes in shape, accommodate extensions and tight corners, leave open
spaces, and utilize essential materials such as yarn, crochet hook, and
natural items like twigs, stones, and shells. Guided throughout the
process, you will engage with your materials, integrating them into
form-fitting creations that breathe new life into familiar objects.
These “cozies” not only redefine their purpose but also elevate them
into unique artistic statements. By the end of the workshop, you can
expect to take home a few small finished pieces or work samples to
inspire further creativity. A basic understanding of crochet is
required.
Please bring the following to the workshop:
- Natural objects to wrap: a stone (palm size), a shell 2-3 inches, and a small branch section, approx 6 inches length with 1-3 side branches.
- Yarn: 2 skeins (different colors) of Pima 100 yarn.
- Crochet hook: Size 2.5 mm
Please consider supporting Sonoma’s local yarn shop Noma Knits. Students receive a 10% discount when purchasing supplies for this workshop.
