Bear Flag Celebration

The 50th annual Bear Flag Celebration sponsored by the Native Sons of the Golden West, Sonoma Chapter, marks the 166th anniversary of the "Bear Flag Revolt" in California.

It begins at 11 a.m. with a traditional ceremony at the Bear Flag Monument in the northeast corner of the Plaza. Admission is free, but meals and beer tastings are not.

Adult-sized chicken barbecue meals will be served up hot for $12 from noon to 4 p.m. Smaller hot dog meals will be available for $5. A $25 wristband buys access to the beer garden where more than 60 microbrews will be served.

At 1 p.m., a historical re-enactment of the famed Bear Flag Revolt will take place in the Grinstead Amphitheatre, featuring a cast of local volunteers playing key characters such as Gen. Mariano Vallejo. The script was originally penned by historical reenactor George Webber.

Following the show, BackTrax will provide live music for the afternoon beginning at 1:30 p.m.
