SONOMA COUNTY - A Santa Rosa couple was arrested Sunday by Sonoma County sheriff's detectives on drug and weapon charges.

Detectives pulled over a vehicle at Gardner Avenue and Marble Street in the Roseland area of unincorporated Sonoma County around 6:30 p.m. when they recognized Edwin Jesus Acevedo Jr., 32, and his 30-year-old girlfriend Sarah Christine Mendoza, sheriff's Sgt. Michael Raasch said.

Acevedo was a suspect in a stolen firearm case and Mendoza had outstanding warrants for shoplifting, DUI and petty theft, Raasch said.

Acevedo was seen reaching into the back seat of the car, and the detectives found a loaded .45-caliber firearm in the vehicle.

The weapon was not the one that was reported stolen, Raasch said.

A search of the couple's home turned up a large amount of ammunition but no other firearms, Raasch said.

Acevedo was arrested and booked in the Sonoma County jail on $150,000 bail for having a firearm in public, committing a felony while out on bail, possession of heroin, violating probation and having a suspended driver's license.

Raasch said Acevedo was arrested in April for being armed and possessing drugs for sale.

Mendoza was booked without bail on the outstanding warrants, disobeying a court order and possession of heroin and methamphetamine.

They are scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday in Sonoma County Superior Court.
