Sign Rules, Sign Regulations, ADUs On Sonoma Planning Commission Agenda

Sonoma planners prepare to debate sign rules, housing policies, and development proposals at Tuesday's meeting.

SONOMA VALLEY, CA — Residents, business owners, and property developers will have several closely watched issues before the Sonoma Planning Commission on Tuesday, including an update to rules about city's signs, a discussion of accessory dwelling unit regulations, and a proposal to expand a home in a protected historic district.

Discussions are expected on new sign regulations, accessory dwelling unit policies, and a residential remodeling project that would expand a home on Chase Street.

One of the meeting's most significant items is a study session on proposed revisions to Sonoma's sign ordinance.

City planners have spent several years reworking the code and are now seeking feedback on updated rules governing sign permits, temporary signage, master sign programs, and sign standards throughout the city.

Staff members say the changes are intended to provide clearer, rules while preserving Sonoma's historic character and improving the permit process.

Commissioners are expected to discuss how temporary signs should be regulated, whether larger multi-tenant developments should receive expanded allowances for shared signage, and how sign standards should apply across different zoning districts.

City staff hope to return later this year with a final ordinance before forwarding recommendations to the City Council.

Commissioners are also scheduled to review a request from the Sonoma Valley Vintners and Growers Foundation to install 21 banners on Plaza light standards during September to promote the Sonoma Valley Wine 200th Anniversary celebration and the annual Vintage Festival. The banners would remain on display throughout September and are expected to highlight events taking place Sept. 25-27 on the Historic Sonoma Plaza.

The commission will also receive a presentation on updates to the city's accessory dwelling unit ordinance, continuing Sonoma's review of housing policies aimed at accommodating state housing requirements and local residential development needs.

During a public hearing, commissioners will also consider a proposal to approve a second-story addition and floor-area-ratio exception for a home at 100 Chase St.

The project would add 358 square feet of living space and a new covered porch to an existing residence, increasing the home's size to approximately 3,469 square feet. City planning staff recommend approval, finding the addition compatible with the neighborhood and historically protected area.

The meeting begins at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the City Council Chambers at 177 First St. West and will be available in person, online, and via the city's livestream platforms.
