Sonoma County Sheriff’s Helicopter Night Rescue Of Firefighters

Press Release: Sheriff's Helicopter Night Rescue of Firefighters

August 22, 2020

On 8-21-20 at approximately 8:15 PM, the Sheriff’s Office received a request for Henry 1 to respond down to the Woodward Fire, which is burning in Marin County in the Point Reyes National Seashore, southwest of Olema. Two firefighters with the Marin County Fire Department were deep in the brush battling the fire when they became trapped on a ridgeline and unable to make it out of the path of the advancing fire.

Upon arrival, Henry 1 located the two firefighters who were trapped approximately 75 yards from the head of the fire. Henry 1 landed approximately a mile from the firefighters and H1’s Tactical Flight Officer (TFO) configured the helicopter with a 100 foot long line. Both Firefighters were rescued simultaneously, as one placed a Bauman Bag rescue device and the other in a horse collar rescue device. They were successfully flown to safety.

The incident was captured on video **brief use of graphic language warning** and the video and additional information can be found on the Sheriff’s Office’s Facebook page at the following link:
