Sonoma Plaza Unveils 'Square Keys' Piano, Welcoming Community Musicians

SONOMA VALLEY, CA — The best public spaces don't just ask people to pass through—they persuade them to stay. As summer temperatures climb, Sonoma is adding two amenities that invite people to linger a little longer: the gift of shade and the simple pleasure of making music in the heart of the Plaza.

Visitors strolling through Sonoma Plaza now have two new reasons to linger after the City unveiled a public piano and installed seasonal shade sails over the Grinstead Amphitheater, expanding public spaces for music, art, and community events.

The centerpiece is SQUARE KEYS, an interactive public piano installed near the Plaza's duck pond through a partnership between the city of Sonoma and the Sebastiani Theatre Foundation.

Local artist Leah Rosenberg transformed the piano into a colorful public artwork inspired by Sonoma.

The installation became one of the first completed projects under the City's expanded Public Art Program, which encourages artists, nonprofit organizations, businesses, and residents to create temporary and permanent public art throughout Sonoma.

The City's Cultural and Fine Arts Commission unanimously supported the proposal, and organizers completed the project without requesting money from the City's Public Art Fund, according to reports.

The idea originated with Tanner Walle, director of community engagement for the Sebastiani Theatre Foundation, who envisioned the piano as a place where strangers, neighbors, and visitors could gather through music, the Sonoma Valley Sun reported.

Organizers also plan occasional performances nearby, while leaving the instrument available for spontaneous community performances throughout the year.

Just steps away, Sonoma partnered with nonprofit Music in Place to install new seasonal shade sails above the Grinstead Amphitheater.

The improvements continue a broader effort to draw more people to the Sonoma Plaza through public art, music, and community.

The Sebastiani Theatre Foundation, established in 2008, has long partnered with the City to preserve the historic theater while expanding arts programming throughout Sonoma. T

Residents can find SQUARE KEYS near the duck pond on Sonoma Plaza, where the piano is available for public use during Plaza hours.

The shaded Grinstead Amphitheater will host Sonoma Sundays concerts and other community events throughout the summer.
