Truck Full Of Chickens Overturns On Hwy 121, Closing Roadway: CHP

SONOMA COUNTY, CA — UPDATE: State Highway 121 in unincorporated Sonoma County south of Sonoma may reopen by about 5 p.m. Thursday following a crash earlier of a big-rig that was carrying thousands of chickens, California Highway Patrol officials said.

The big-rig overturned onto its roof and into a vineyard off the side of the road near Ramal Road at about 5:30 a.m. The driver was trapped inside and chickens reportedly were on the road, according to the CHP.

Petaluma Poultry responded to gather the estimated 6,000 chickens running loose on the road, CHP officer Marc Renspurger said.

ORIGINAL POST: A crash Thursday morning involving a big-rig carrying chickens closed part of State Highway 121 just east of Schellville. Northbound and southbound closures of the roadway at Ramal Road and Napa Road remained in effect as of 10 a.m. due to the overturned big-rig, according to California Highway Patrol officials.

The incident was reported at 5:33 a.m. Thursday and involved a big-rig carrying as many as 6,000 chickens. As the semi overturned, some chickens spilled onto the roadway, CHP officials said.

The truck may have been heading to or from Petaluma Poultry, according to CHP reports.

A Sig-alert was issued at 6:22 a.m. and traffic was being diverted off the roadway at Ramal Road and Napa Road, CHP officials said.
