Council Approves $880,000 to Treat Contaminated Well

The City Council awarded a construction contract that will result in the construction of a water treatment system for a pump that has been contaminated with iron and manganese.

The l voted unanimously to award Atlas Allied Inc. an $883, 860 to construct a water treatment system in Well No. 27, which is located on Tweedy Boulevard.  The two decade old well had become contaminated with a large amount of manganese and iron from its surrounding floor.

“The city is putting a filtration system to remove these minerals,” said Mohammad Mostahkami, Director of Public Works for the city of South Gate. “However, the water already meets the public safety guidelines of the state, with out this filter.”

The decision to build this well was based on complaints that were made by residents of South Gate’s west side. This was because some residents were worried about the odor and cloudiness of the water, which were related to the excessive minerals.

“We are trying to take care of the complaints we have had,” said Mayor Bill De Witt. “The water appeared cloudy, this is not necessarily bad for you, but it does not look good.”

The new water treatment system for the well will begin construction in May and will be finished by January 2013.
