Freebie Alert: A Wedding? Yes, Lynwood Mayor Marrying 10 Couples for Free

Mayor Aide Castro was asked a few months ago if she was allowed to marry people. When she found out she could, she planned the big day.

From the city of Lynwood:

Ten couples will be married for free by the city of Lynwood’s Mayor this Saturday, Aug. 30, for the first time in Lynwood history.

Mayor Aide Castro was asked a few months ago if she was allowed to marry people – a question she said bewildered her. Curious, she called the County Registrar Recorder’s Office and was told that she could officially marry couples as long as she was sanctioned by the county and certified by the state of California.

On one day only, this Saturday, Aug. 30, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Mayor of Lynwood will be performing 10 individual non-religious wedding ceremonies for couples who made reservations. While all 10 spots have been filled, the Mayor will still be accepting drop-ins on Saturday as long as couples have an official marriage license from the County Registrar-Recorder’s Office to be wed on August 30, 2014.

The Mayor said that she is ecstatic to be able to perform the marriage ceremonies at no cost for her community. “I had never even thought about it, but I’m honored that people are entrusting me with this responsibility,” said Mayor Castro. “Marriage is a beautiful thing and I’m happy to add this additional duty to my job as a civil servant and elected official.”
