Your Wallet's Going To Be Lighter Saturday, Lynwood. Here's Why

The tax increase, approved by Los Angeles County voters in November 2016, will bring the Lynwood sales and use tax rate to 10.25%.

LYNWOOD, CA — Starting July 1, your wallet will start to feel a little bit lighter. Measure M, which was approved by Los Angeles County voters in November 2016, is a half-cent sales tax increase expected to generate $120 billion over the first 40 years in effect.

The measure applies to every city and unincorporated area of Los Angeles County, making the sales and use tax rate 9.25 percent. Fifteen cities within the county have special district taxes, according to a State Board of Equalization news release:

  • Avalon: 9.75%
  • Commerce: 9.75%
  • Compton: 10.25%
  • Culver City: 9.75%
  • Downey: 9.75%
  • El Monte: 9.75%
  • Inglewood: 9.75%
  • La Mirada: 10.25%
  • Long Beach: 10.25%
  • Lynwood: 10.25%
  • Pico Riversa: 10.25%
  • San Fernando: 9.75%
  • Santa Monica: 10.25%
  • South El Monte: 9.75%
  • South Gate: 10.25%

Several Measure M-funded transportation projects are under consideration including: extending light rail lines, adding rapid transit bus lines, widening freeways, street repairs, and more. Last month, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti suggested using Measure M money to build a monorail over the San Diego (405) Freeway connecting the San Fernando Valley with the Westside.
