Lynwood Unified’s Graduation Rates Climb

The Lynwood Unified School District is continuing on its path of success, with the latest numbers from the California Department of Education showing that the District boosted its comprehensive high school graduation rates to more than 80 percent last year.

LUSD’s two comprehensive high schools have boasted significant double-digit graduation rate increases since the 2010-11 school year, and surpass the state average of 80.2 percent and county average of 77 percent for the 2012-13 academic year, according to data released by the state on April 28.

“This is fantastic news for our students and our District, which has consistently seen an upward trend of successful graduates over the last few years,” said LUSD Board of Education President Briseida Gonzalez. “I’m proud to say that we are moving in the right direction of ensuring that all of our students are prepared to enroll in higher education and enter the workforce.”

Since the 2010-11 school year, the number of graduating seniors at Firebaugh High School has skyrocketed nearly 20 percent: in 2012-13, 89.1 percent of seniors graduated, marking a significant jump from 81.7 percent in 2011-12 and 69.4 percent in 2010-11. Lynwood High School’s rates have also made substantial gains: in 2012-13, 80.9 percent of seniors graduated, an increase from 79.1 percent in 2011-12 and 67.9 percent in 2010-11.

The impressive gains are the result of Lynwood Unified’s Achieving Greatness Initiative, a strategic plan to deliver a world-class education to every student in the Lynwood community. The results are also due to LUSD’s focus on raising the bar for all students and providing them with rigorous and engaging educational opportunities to prepare them for college and career.

As part of the initiative, LUSD is ensuring that teachers utilize data to deliver effective, personalized student instruction, and that the District is providing an intricate system in which students set and achieve their personal, college and career goals.

“Lynwood Unified is doing everything it can to ensure that students are not falling through the cracks and that they have every resource available to them to excel in their education,” said LUSD Superintendent Paul Gothold. “We are working diligently to fulfill our mission and our soaring graduation rates are testament to the efforts of our entire District community.”
