Medical Records Force Delay in South East High School Stabbing Case

Abraham López stands accused of stabbing Cindi Santana in South East High School.

The desire to inspect medical records pertinent to the trial of Abraham Lopez, 18, by both the prosecution and defense team was given as the reason for postponing the start of the trial, during Monday’s pre-trial hearing at the Norwalk Courthouse.

“There are a lot of medical records that are pertinent to the case,” said Scott Herin, the public defender representing López. “We would like to take a detailed look at them.”

López last month. He currently stands accused of fatally stabbing his ex girlfriend Cindi Santana, 17, at the cafeteria of  last September.

The medical records that are being waited upon have to do with the injuries sustained by Cindi Santana.

“It is matter discovering the injuries and learning about how they were inflicted,” said John Pomeroy, the prosecutor in the case. “As well as to see how those injuries caused her death.”

The charges listed against López remain the same, and include murder, 3 counts of assault with a knife,  the bringing of weapons to school grounds, among others.

Judge Lori Ann Fournier set the trial date for thirty days after the next hearing. Both parties agreed on a June 28th pre-trial hearing. However, Herin believes that the court date will probably have more delays as new evidence is gathered.

“This wont be the last continuance of the case,” concluded Herin, adding that with new evidence more time will be required by both parties out of need to better study it before the actual trial. “This is a step in the whole process. ”
