Norwalk Man Attempts to Carjack South Gate Police Officer

The off-duty officer was driving his own vehicle during the incident.

The attempted carjacking of an off-duty South Gate police officer early Saturday led to the arrest of a 20-year-old Norwalk man, sheriff's officials reported.

The attempted carjacking was reported about 4 a.m. on Norwalk Boulevard, near Cyclops Street, according to investigators from the sheriff's Norwalk station.

Officials said the officer was behind the wheel of his own vehicle when two Latinos stepped out into the lane in which he was traveling and one of them pointed a pistol at the cop.

The officer sped around the suspects and called an emergency dispatcher for help, officials said.

Sheriff's deputies dispatched to the scene spotted two men running east on Cyclops Street.

Deputies searching the area found one suspect behind a home in the 12200 block of Cyclops Street.

Nicholas Andres of Norwalk was arrested without incident, officials said.

The SGPD officer identified Andres as the suspect who pointed the gun at him, and search dogs discovered a pistol in the area, officials said.

The other suspect remained at large, officials said.

Andres was booked at the Norwalk Station for assault with a deadly weapon. He was being held in lieu of $50,000 bail.
