South Gate Police: Warn about Gold Snatchers

Robberies of gold related merchandise will rise with the high market price.

The South Gate Police Department (SGPD) is warning residents to be careful with their gold jewelry or objects. Incidents tend to rise with price and the police believes that residents should take extra precautions to be safe.

“It is a problem that arises every time gold goes up,” said Captain Keith Hupp of the South Gate Police Department. “The high price of gold has made it a viable target for crooks.”

On the 23rd of May, a man snatched a gold chain from a female student after knocking her to the floor outside of South East High School, before escaping in a vehicle. A witness reported the incident to the police along with the license plate numbers of the vehicle. Detectives from the SGPD  arrested both suspects and retrieved the chain in Los Angeles that same day.

Certain precautions can limit your exposure to such an event, explained Capt. Hupp.
