Tweedy Mile Street Fair Expected to Surpass Last Year’s

Organizers are expecting high number visitors for this weekend's fair.

This year’s 22nd annual Tweedy Mile Street Fair will bring in an estimated 250,000 to 300,000 visitors to South Gate’s very own Tweedy Boulevard. Organizers have already sold out of vendor booths and presale carnival tickets are almost gone.

“This is going to be a good fair,” said Laverne Bates, chairperson of the Tweed Mile Street Fair committee. “It will be better then last year’s.”

The Tweedy Mile Business Association, which organizes the fair, expects to increase its organizations revenue by 40 percent in comparison to last year, which was a difficult year because of the weak economy.

Businesses at Tweedy Boulevard are also predicted to enjoy a profitable weekend.

“Business can expect a good three day’s for their business,” said Bates.

The South Gate Police Department is on full alert and will have large contingent of its officers present at all times.

“Every available officer who is not normally working has been requested to work during the street fair,” said Captain Keith Hupp of the South Gate Police Department. “This is because of the large crowds.”

The police will also have a zero tolerance on alcohol infractions and any criminal activity.

“We will aggressively cite people for alcohol violations and any criminal activity,” said Capt. Hupp.
