Two men Arrested in Failed Fraud

The suspects were trying to get a refund for a car that they had not truly purchased.

Last Thursday, at around 5 p.m., the South Gate Police Department apprehended two suspects as they attempted to steal close to $15,000 from King Ranch Motors, a local car dealership, on Firestone Boulevard.

The men wanted to get refunded on a used BMW that they had fraudulently obtained two days prior using a prepaid debit card.

“The suspects complained that they could not get the car registered,” said Sgt. Patino of the South Gate Police Department. “[They] basically demanded to return the car, and the dealership accepted.”

By the time the suspects arrived, the dealer had called the bank affiliated with the debit card, which stated that the suspects did not have enough funds to cover the costs.

The dealer called the police, and the suspect attempting the transaction, along with his alleged lookout tried to get away.

“The suspect ran away but he was apprehended,” said Sgt. Patino. “As well as someone else who we believe was out there as a lookout.”
