Community Meeting Set For Huntington-Fremont Corridor Project

Originally combined into one project, the two corridors will now proceed separately.

SOUTH PASADENA, CA — The city will hold a community meeting next week to discuss planned improvements along Huntington Drive as work on the Fremont Avenue portion of the project is delayed.

The meeting on Thursday, Nov. 12 is scheduled for 6-7:30 p.m. in the South Pasadena Middle School auditorium, 1500 Fair Oaks Ave.

City officials said residents will receive an update on the $46 million project and can provide feedback.

Planned improvements include upgraded traffic signals, sidewalk repairs, street resurfacing and bicycle lanes. The project is intended to improve safety, accessibility and connections for people walking, bicycling and using other forms of transportation, officials.

Most of the project's funding is from voter-approved Measures R and M via LA Metro, along with more than $323,000 from the state's 710 Local Alternative Transportation Improvement Program.

Originally combined into one project, the two corridors will now proceed separately. Huntington Drive improvements will move forward as planned, while the city reviews technical challenges and resident concerns along Fremont Avenue, officials said.

Issues on Fremont Avenue include rights of way, parking, landscaping and "prescriptive easements," which involves city approval for someone to use land they don't own for a specific purpose.

A separate meeting on Fremont Avenue will be scheduled once the city has more information and an updated timeline, officials said.

The corridors are Huntington Drive from Alhambra Road to Garfield Avenue and Fremont Avenue from Columbia Street to Alhambra Road.

Following community meetings, the City Council approved design concepts for Huntington Drive in May and Fremont Avenue in June.
