150+ Flights Canceled at SFO So Far Friday

Dozens of departures and arrivals were canceled at the busy airport due to a storm.

By Bay City News Service:

Weather at San Francisco International Airport is causing flight cancellations and delays Friday, airport officials said.

Seventy-seven departures and 78 arrivals have been canceled as of mid-day Friday, said airport duty manager Joe Walsh. Walsh said delays are about 60 to 90 minutes.

The delays are occurring to both inbound and outbound flights, but Walsh said most of the delays are to arrivals.

A delay program at the airport went into effect at 9 a.m. Friday and will be in effect until 10 p.m., Walsh said.

Lower visibility can initiate a delay program, which reduces the number of planes that can land. Fewer planes are allowed to land because the airport’s runways are side-by-side and closer together than allowed under federal rules for landing under certain low visibility conditions.

Officials at Oakland International Airport are reporting one canceled flight Friday because of the weather. An Alaska Airlines flight to Santa Rosa has been canceled, said an airport duty manager.

A spokeswoman at Norman Y. Mineta San Jose International Airport said there are no cancellations at the airport Friday.

“We are in good shape,” said spokeswoman Rosemary Barnes.

Barnes said two flights scheduled to land at San Francisco International Airport will be landing at San Jose International Airport because of the weather conditions in San Francisco.
