78 Traffic Stops, 68 Citations Given in 1-Day South San Francisco Distracted Driving Operation

Law enforcement officers worked together to stop distracted drivers on Friday.

SAN MATEO COUNTY, CA- Police officers from Daly City, South San Francisco and Menlo Park worked together on Friday in a campaign aimed at increasing awareness of the dangers of distracted driving.

"The detail was part of an ongoing Office of Traffic Safety funded effort in San Mateo County to increase traffic safety on the Peninsula, coordinated by the San Mateo County Police Chiefs and Sheriff Association," according to Burlingame Police Sgt. Jim Ford.

Officers stuck primarily to South San Francisco and Daly City for Friday's operation, and made a total of 78 traffic stops, according to Ford. They ended up writing 68 citations for the following:

  • 31 citations for cell phone violations
  • 8 citations for texting violations
  • 5 citations for seatbelt violations
  • 3 citations for red light violations
  • 21 other traffic violation citations3
  • 6 drivers were ticketed for driving on a suspended driver’s license.

Funding for the special operation came from state and federal grants.
