Bay Area Food Company Recalls 410 Pounds of Beef Products

A San Leandro food company is recalling about 410 pounds of beef products because their meat filling did not meet critical cooking standards, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service said Monday. Galant Food Company will recall specific editions of two different products that were produced between Sept. 22 and Sept. 24.

The products were shipped to a retailer in the Bay Area along with a distributor elsewhere in Northern California. One product is the 4.5-ounce Galina’s Original Beef and Cheese Piroshki, 12 or 24 per case, with case codes 092214, 092314, and 092414. The other product being recalled is the 5-ounce Paramount Beef Piroshki, 25 per case, with case code 092314. Both products bear the establishment number “EST.9014”.

The Food Safety and Inspection Service has received no reports of illnesses due to consumption of these products, but advises anyone concerned about illness to contact a health care provider. The problem was originally discovered by FSIS staff who were reviewing records at a Galant Food Company establishment.

Steps will be taken to make sure the product is no longer available to consumers, according to the agency. Once completed, a list of retailers the defective products were distributed to will be posted at www.fsis.usda.gov/recalls.
