UPDATED: CHP Officer Was Stabbed; Suspect Caught

Police are telling the public to avoid the area.

UPDATE 11:45 A.M.:

A California Highway Patrol officer was stabbed in San Francisco’s South of Market neighborhood Tuesday morning, police said.

The stabbing occurred shortly after 10 a.m. in the area of Essex and Harrison streets, police said. A suspect was later detained in a parking lot at Fourth and Freelon streets, police spokeswoman Officer Grace Gatpandan said.

The CHP officer was transported to San Francisco General Hospital. The extent of the officer’s injuries was not immediately available.

Authorities are still advising people to avoid the area during the investigation into the stabbing.

A California Highway Patrol officer was injured in San Francisco’s South of Market neighborhood this morning, police said.

Police Officer Albie Esparza wrote on Twitter at 10:30 a.m. that the incident occurred in the area of Essex and Harrison streets.

More information about how the officer was injured was not immediately available, however a suspect related to the incident is in custody, police said.

Authorities are advising people to avoid the area during the investigation into the incident.
