Kaiser Permanente’s San Mateo County Hospitals Receive an “A” For Safety Again

South San Francisco and Redwood City Hospitals among 20 KP hospitals honored by national Leapfrog Group for limiting patient injuries, reducing medical errors and preventing infections

Kaiser Permanente South Francisco and Redwood City Hospitals earned the top “A” ratings for the third consecutive year from the Leapfrog Group in its annual safety report, which examined and graded more than 2,500 hospitals throughout the United States.  The two medical centers are among twenty Kaiser Permanente hospitals in Northern California that earned an “A”.

“This is a tremendous honor for our San Mateo County medical centers,” said Frank Beirne, Senior Vice President and Area Manager for Kaiser Permanente. “It shows that KP’s constant commitment to patient safety is being recognized nationally and keeping our members well.”

The Leapfrog Group, an independent national nonprofit run by employers and other large purchasers of health benefits, released its Hospital Safety Scores after examining publicly available data on patient injuries, medical and medication errors and infections at U.S.  hospitals, which were then assigned A, B, C, D, or F grades for their safety records.

Gregory Adams, President of Kaiser Foundation Hospitals/Health Plan in Northern California said “These top safety scores demonstrate the hard work of our physicians, nurses and staff to ensure our patients are being cared for safely and receive world-class treatment at our facilities.”

Kaiser Permanente’s South San Francisco and Redwood City Hospitals serve more than 200,000 members in San Mateo County. In addition, Kaiser Permanente’s advanced neuroscience center at the Redwood City Hospital provides care for severe head trauma patients.  Our Neuro Specialsits take referals from throughout Northern California.

And a new Kaiser Permanente hospital in Redwood City will open in late 2014, adjacent to the original hospital.
