Kids Tell Bullies They're "Born This Way"

Last week, students had a full schedule of anti-bullying programming, including a rally, a day of silence and even anti-bullying cupcakes.

About 150 students kicked things off on Monday with a flash mob where they danced to Lady Gaga's "Born This Way." 

"The message is to be yourself," said seventh-grader Mary Dimailig, who added that bullying sometimes "gets out of hand."

"On the girls' side, there's gossip, and on the boys' side there's roughhousing and stuff," Dimailig said.

The students, many of whom wore blue t-shirts to emphasize the sadness caused by bullying, entered the yard from different directions as the music started and started dancing in the midst of fellow students. Art teacher Cait Collins helped the students learn the dance from a Zumba video on YouTube.

Seventh-grader Julia Swing said the flash mob sent a strong message to bullies.

"It makes them see how many people are against something that they're doing," she said.
