Las Fiestas Patrias Honors Latin American Independence Through Dance and Song

Over 300 adults and children gathered at City Hall for an afternoon of elaborate folkloric dances and performances.

Hundreds came out to celebrate the independence of Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico and Nicaragua in front of City Hall on Sunday afternoon.  Sur San Francisco Unidos organized the celebration of "Las Fiestas Patrias," or the Patriotic Holidays, with dance, songs and performances.

The celebration drew several special guests, including South San Francisco's mayor, Mark Addiego, the San Francisco consular generals of México, Guatemala and Nicaragua, and several South San Francisco city council members.

The day started with a procession of costumed performers and flags along Grand Avenue to City Hall's front steps. The performers included Ballet Folklórico Alma de México of South San Francisco High School and community, Ballet Folklórico of South San Francisco Parks and Recreation, Ballet Folklórico Guatemalteco, Grupo Folklórico from Pacifica, Danza Azteka Teocalli, and singer Beatríz Guzmán.
