Man, 19, In Court For DUI-Suspected Crash That Killed Brother, 21, Woman, 18

Joshua Maldonado of Brisbane was the driver in the double-fatality crash that occurred Friday night in South San Francisco, police said.

SANΒ MATEOΒ COUNTY, CA -- A 19-year-old man accused of driving drunk and causing a collision that killed his 21-year-old brother and an 18-year-old woman Friday night in South San Francisco was arraigned in a San Mateo County courtroom Tuesday.Β 

Brisbane resident Joshua Maldonado was charged with two counts of vehicular manslaughter, one count of driving under the influence involving injury to another and one count of driving with a blood-alcohol level over 0.08 percent, according to District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe.

Maldonado remains in custody and his bail was set at $5,000, Wagstaffe said.

Maldonado will return to court again tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. and may enter a plea, according to Wagstaffe.

The collision occurred Friday night around 11:55 p.m. at the intersection of Airport Boulevard and Pine Avenue, police said.
Joshua Maldonado was driving a green 1994 Honda Civic and was traveling south on Airport Boulevard between 80 and 90 mph in a 35 mph zone, according to police.

The Honda then had a glancing collision with a Mazda at the intersection at Pine Avenue. The collision caused the Honda to strike a tree along the road, roll over and then strike a second tree, splitting the car in half.

Two passengers inside the Honda, later identified as San Francisco resident Fabiola Corona, 18, and Joshua Maldonado's brother Brisbane resident Gabriel Maldonado, 21, were ejected from the vehicle during the collision.Β 

The two were pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The Mazda that collided with the Honda sustained minor damage and the driver and passenger in that car were uninjured, police said.Β Officers at the scene noted that Joshua Maldonado displayed signs of being intoxicated. He was taken to a hospital for treatment.Β 

After he was released from the hospital Saturday morning, officers arrested him, according to police.

A defense attorney for Joshua Maldonado was not immediately available for comment.
