Man Found Guilty In Brutal Skateboard Assault On Peninsula Cop
The defendant was acquitted of attempted murder in Thanksgiving 2016 attack that severely injured South San Francisco Officer Robby Chon.

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, CA – A man who struck and seriously injured a South San Francisco police officer with a skateboard on Thanksgiving Day in 2016 has been convicted of assault and other felonies, but a jury acquitted him of the most serious charge of attempted murder, prosecutors said today.
Luis Ramos-Coreas, 30, was convicted Friday of assault on a peace officer, resisting arrest and felony battery for the attack on Nov. 24, 2016.
Officers had responded to Ramos-Coreas being irate to customers at a business in the 300 block of Grand Avenue. As they approached him, he refused their commands and rode away on a skateboard, police said.

Officer Robbie Chon chased Ramos-Coreas, who stopped, turned and hit Chon in the head with the skateboard. Chon lost consciousness and later required brain surgery to stop bleeding, but recovered enough that he was able to go home by Christmas, police said. Chon returned to duty this past January.
After the attack, other officers were able to arrest Ramos-Coreas, who in court pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.

Friday's verdict came on the ninth day of trial. The case returned to court today for Ramos-Coreas' decision on whether he still wanted to pursue the insanity defense.
Defense attorney James Reilly said that given the verdict Friday, his client elected to withdraw that plea and move forward with sentencing, which is scheduled for Jan. 15.
"I think the jury reached the correct verdicts on all four of the counts," Reilly said, adding that he thought the evidence was "insufficient" to justify an attempted murder conviction.
