Man Killed on I-880 in Milpitas ID'd as Yuriy Usatyy of SSF

Police said his car broke down on the highway and he stepped out and stood next to the car when he was struck by a passing motorist.

A man killed when he stepped out of his disabled car on Interstate Highway 880 in Milpitas on Sunday night was identified as 35-year-old Yuriy Usatyy of South San Francisco, according to the Santa Clara County medical examiner’s office.

Usatyy was driving his 2010 Toyota sedan north on Highway 880 just before midnight, but the car broke down because of an earlier collision north of Montague Expressway, according to the CHP.

He stepped out of the car and stood next to his open car door when he was struck by another Toyota driven by a 47-year-old man who swerved to avoid the disabled car.

Usatyy was killed at the scene.

The driver of the other car was not suspected to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs, according to the CHP.
