REPORT: South San Francisco among best small cities to start a business in U.S.

The city benefited from being close to San Francisco.

Want to start a business in the Bay Area? South San Francisco is the place to be, according to a consumer finance site.

In the report published by NerdWallet alongside Entrepreneur.com, South San Francisco ranked among the top 20 small cities to start a business in the nation, coming in at no. 13.

The report determined their rankings based on the Census data on the following factors:

  • Business climate: average revenue of businesses, percentage of businesses with paid employees and businesses per 100 people
  • Local economic health: median annual income, median monthly housing costs and unemployment rate

South San Francisco benefit from being next to San Francisco, a financial hub in Northern California. This allows business owners to operate within a smaller, close-knit business community, while still having access to a major financial center.

South San Francisco also has a strong local economy, with the average unemployment rate of 5.9 percent and the average median income of $60,764, according to the 2000 census.
