Riechel Informs: Relay For Life Road For Recovery Car Show and Race April 23rd 2016

Since there is no Relay For Life event in 2016 in South San Francisco, consider attending the San Bruno event.

Saturday April 23rd 2016 Relay For Life San Bruno will hold its first Road For Recovery Car Race and Car Show

The following photos show some examples of very elaborate cars.

The Road to Recovery Car Show and Race can be a really important part of the Relay for Life since it not only provides a fun group activity, but it also brings to focus an important part of what Fight Back is trying to accomplish at the Relay:

1. Educate participants and attendees about the American Cancer Society’s Road to Recovery program

2. Stress the importance of recruiting volunteer drivers to get patients to/from treatments

Car Show:

· Your “vehicle” must be constructed of a cardboard box or boxes.

· The maximum width of your “vehicle” is four feet (no length restrictions)

· Each “vehicle” MUST be able to accommodate two people – a “driver” and a “passenger”.

· Your “vehicle” may NOT be motorized or have any “mechanical” parts (no cycles of any type). The maximum power allowed is two-human power!

· Your “vehicle” MUST have a “gas tank” on the driver’s side made out of a box with a slot for monetary “votes” or donations.

· Decorate your “vehicle”!! Feel free to get as creative as you would like with this. Example: You can incorporate something educational about cancer on your car or you can decorate based on your campsite theme.

Car Show Voting:

· Votes are cast by fellow Relay participants and visitors with a monetary donation into the cars “gas tank”

· Voting should be based not only the overall appearance, design and ingenuity, but also the educational qualities, and the ability to clue folks in on a key aspect of the work of the American Cancer Society.

· The car with the most “votes” wins.

Car Race:

· The car race should follow the car show so as to not wreck the car before they are judged.

· As the race starts, there should only be 1 person in the car (the “driver”). At the designated place on the course, the second person will get in (the “patient”).

· The driver runs to the patient and allows them to get in the car. Then they both run to a designated location that serves at the “treatment center”. Once there, they get a slip, turn around and head back to the patient’s home. After the patient gets out of the car, the driver runs to the finish line.

· First car to complete the race as described above and cross the finish line, wins.
