It is with great pleasure that we accept this proclamation on behalf of The American Cancer Society and North San Mateo County Relay for Life.

Our Relay is a 24 hour event, Sat April 29th 10:am to Sun 30th 10am. At San Bruno City Park.

The 24 hour represents a day in the life of a cancer patient. It is our goal to have at least one member from each team on the track throughout the 24 hours. It is physically hard, emotionally draining and you think you just can’t do another hour or lap. The cancer patient doesn’t have a choice.

We have been relaying for 16 years and are 58 year So City residents. Sam is 7 year prostate cancer survivor and I am 17 year ovarian cancer survivor. I have ongoing treatment because my tumors are recurring. Relay is our passion, to be able to help other cancer patients and survivors know there is HOPE and help, and to be part of funding research to find a cure. There isn’t a cure yet, but we have less invasive treatments and better quality of life. I remember when β€œyou have cancer” was a death sentence. We have 15.5 Million survivors in the U.S. We are blessed to be two of those. I think the many hours/years dedicated to Relay for Life is paying off.

We are excited to have So. San Francisco join with San Bruno and Daly City. Coming together as one community, joining our fundraising abilities with a united goal, Helping ACS fund research and provide many free services to cancer patients just by calling 1-800-227-2345, That number doesn’t take holidays, Or www.cancer.org

I would imagine that everyone in this room has been touched by cancer in some way, perhaps lost a loved one, maybe a survivor yourself, know someone in treatment. Cancer can attack anyone at any time. It does not discriminate. We all need to be our own advocate by getting the preventive screenings, colonoscopy, and mammogram and know your family health history. Early detection is crucial to any cancer cure.

Won’t you join us as a So. San Franciscan and come out next Sat. 10 am At San Bruno City Park. Lend your support in our opening ceremony, maybe walk a lap or two in honor or memory of a loved one or friend. Come cheer us on as we walk with other survivors in celebration. Or maybe come for the evening Luminaria ceremony. I think these ceremonies will give you a heartfelt realization of what Relay for Life is meant to be. A time for communities to come together to Celebrate, Remember and Fight back against a disease that has taken too much from us. Together we can make a difference.

Thank you

/s/ Dorothy Lake

Relay For Life event leadership team members from SSF, Daly City, and San Bruno observed the proclamation presentation and San Bruno Vice Mayor Ken Ibarra spoke briefly.
