Did you know that over 90% of the seafood that Americans consume is imported?
With this educational event the San Mateo County Harbor District is attempting to change this pattern and return American catch back to American eaters. The importance of locally caught sustainable seafood to human health, the local economy, and the carbon footprint and overall health of the planet will be emphasized at this event.
For over 10 years fishermen and scientists have worked together to adapt fishing gear, not just to catch more fish, but also to catch only the fish whose harvest the ecosystem can support. You will learn about important decisions for sustainable fisheries and the clear biological signs that indicate the arrival of sensitive and critical periods in a given fish life cycle.
Presenters will share information on the collaborative efforts between local fishermen and The Nature Conservancy, and the benefits of seafood in the human diet.
